It would have been a liquid originally. Stored in a glass jar currently. The medicine is ‘Polypody root extract oil’ – ‘Polypodie or Oke Ferne’ is the Tudor name. Terracotta ceramic jar originally stored the medicine. Two handles and original cork. 20 x 16cm |

It was found in barber / surgeon’s cabin in a terracotta, ceramic jar of Portuguese origin with a cork in the top. It was used when a patient felt melancholy, ‘draws out fleame and cholor’. The barber / surgeon would have administered this as well as cutting hair! |
