Artefact Description Very good condition. Khaki. ‘J. Collett, 1943’ marked inside. Cap badge is from the Wiltshire regiment. Made of brass with Maltese cross and King’s crown. Two brass buttons with the Royal Crest at the front of the hat.

History of Artefact Father was a member of the home-guard.
‘‘He was a railway man, railways had to keep running through the war, so he couldn’t go to war. He had a gun at home. It was their responsibility to make sure that the black-out was observed, they did regular patrols. He would have been one of the youngest members of the home-guard.’

Historian - ‘This is a good example of the home-guard uniform. The home-guard was established by Churchill as a morale boosting initiative. They were trained to put out fires along the railways in the event of any bombing. The home-guard were volunteers.’

Special Memories ‘He was very proud, conscientious and wanted to be a part of things. He would come in after a railway shift and then do his home-guard duty. It reminds me of how proud he was, the only time he ever kissed me was when my mother died.'
